Blue Lake’s Summer Clothes

Ian Sweenie’s group went out to Blue lake at the end of May and took some lovely shots of the lake in it’s early summer beauty!
The lake varies from 3ft at its shallowest running to over 15ft at its South West end.  It’s a fascinating mixture of bars and areas of sand, rocks, gravel, clay and silt – a real maze of features guaranteed to keep anglers happy whilst testing their skills.
“An excellent venue for chilling out while catching some really nice fish.”   Ian Sweenie, May ’13

You can see where the lakes name derives from…
The weedy areas tend to be located at the shallow end, in the bays and along the southern bank, providing holding areas for wary carp and giving you areas to stalk them.

‘The Boss’ makes an appearance again at Golden Oak!

David Price came to Golden Oak with a PB of 49lb 11ozs. On Wednesday 26th June he was woken up at 8 in the morning and smashed his old PB by landing 'The Boss', weighing in at 63lb 8ozs beating the lake record by 2oz.

Does low air pressure influence carp to feed?

One of my  instruments that I use to catch that weary carp is to watch the weather. After a long period of high pressure in those summer months, when we have those nice warm days and pleasant nights, I am always waiting for that break in the weather.
The lakes come alive in low pressure with all sorts of fly hatches taking place. Just watch the Swallows and House Martins chasing the hatches as they skim the surface of the water. This is the time to get out the rods.

The calm before the storm…
This happened today! I watched the weather on the TV at breakfast time and could see that they predicted a band of low pressure crossing the UK from the West which would be pushed along by the Jet Stream.
Rain with thunderstorms was on the menu so I contemplated a few hours on my syndicate lake. I arrived around midday and went into a corner of the lake where the wind was pushing. Intending on only a short session I wanted to make the best of my time. I put out 2 rods both baited with Quality Baits Squid and Orange 16mil bottom baits. Around the baits I put out around 20 free offerings and sat down and waited.

My 3rd run in half an hour, a 27lb 11oz beautifully scaled mirror
It was slightly overcast and warm and I could see that on the horizon a storm was brewing. Within the next 1/2 hour I had 3 runs, missed the 1st but landed the other 2, one of my stockies and a lovely scattered scaled mirror of 27lb 11oz.

Thunder clouds approaching
No sooner that I had returned the fish the heavens opened accompanied by an almighty clash of thunder, followed by torrential rain.
The wind changed direction and I saw the fish move out of my bay and went on this new wind to the far side of the lake. Mission accomplished I wound in the rods and headed off back home. Good timing and good bait, you can’t beat it.

Watersmeet is keeping it’s anglers busy…

Thomas Lawson was out at Watersmeet at the end of may, coming away with 35 fish on the bank…
Details of your catches: Main fish caught from far bank, tight to edge. 5 or 6 fish stalked. Fishing got very hard last few days but will pick up again. Total 35 fish caught.
Your best tactics/bait/rigs: Peg 3 corner off far bank. Cell 18mm produced all of the 30lb fish. Peg 2 far bank next to snags all baits.

Meet the Parents

We have been taking a good look at some of the recent 40′s that have been gracing the banks at Oakview this year. We have managed to identify the 40lb carp caught by Billy Berridge in late May as being the same one caught by Gary Hewes in July of 2012 at 29lb 1oz.  A gain of 11lb in 10 months – amazing!

During this study, our attention has turned to the stock pond.  Regulars at Oakview will know that we religiously feed the stock fish every day when weather conditions are right.
We have the history of one of these fish as it’s so easy to recognise.  The first photo shows the baby during a routine netting of the main lake in 2009 – we wanted to keep this beauty, so back it went.  The second photo shows the same fish being transferred to the stock pond during our November 2010 netting.  The third photo shows the same fish after having been ‘chipped’ and returned to the stock pond in May 2011 – weighing in at 6lb 3oz.

We are hoping that the weather conditions this autumn will be favourable for a netting of both the main lake and stock pond and, if this carp (and a few of his / her stunning brothers, sisters and cousins) have grown up enough, they are going to join their parents in the big-boys lake!

Lake Special Boilies do the job for Tim & Hugh

Father & Son Tim & Hugh Strange spent the week of 25th May  with us at Genets on their first French carp fishing holiday…
Using the lake special boilies they both well & truly smashed their PB’s Tim doing so twice, the first time on the Tuesday with a 47lb 8oz Mirror. Hugh followed on Wednesday with his new PB of a 41lb 10oz Mirror. Tim then beat his PB again on Friday with a 53lb Mirror.
Genets Carp Fishing France

Their tactics were to work as a team, Tim at the far bank with the remote control & Hugh at their rods sending out their rigs in the bait-boat, Tim then threw  in a scattering of chopped-up boilies, pellet & maize around the area.

This made for very accurate placement of their rigs in the same spot each time which worked very well for them.
Their comments at the end of the week were -

Heavenly Holly Pools

Jim Kelly recently took a break from field testing (you can read about those adventures here) to travel out to Holly Pools for a relaxing break, he kindly provided us with this write-up on his return…
Introduction
When choosing a holiday it is really important to match the holiday to your needs, for example if you are agoraphobic you wouldn’t go on a walking holiday in the Sahara. Holidays with fishing are just the same, the holiday should match your experience and your needs. If you have a few years experience or want to take your partner, is it realistic to book a holiday on an inland sea or a swamp? So what do Holly Pools provide?
  • Superb accommodation, including swimming pool and two double bedrooms.
  • A secluded location in the very heart of the countryside, but within reach of large towns and points of interest. Just let the stress of everyday life wash away.
  • Three pools including a specimen lake, with carp and cats to over 40lb.
  • A river trout river at the bottom of the garden.
Does this sound like the type of holiday that you are looking for? well read on…

Carp and Cat Lake looking from the dam end
The Pools
The main carp and cat lake is approximately 1.5 acres; it gently shelves from a few feet to 9 feet at the dam end, the margins are deep and the carp patrol them. There are silty patches (only a few inches deep) and areas of hard gravel. There are four main swims with a stalking swim at the shallow end.

The Lake of the Giants, this is Vaumigny – Field Testing Tales

Its the last week in May of 2013 and Ron Key and I are off to test yet another new lake for Angling Lines, Vaumigny…
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
The beautiful clear water of Vaumigny
Vaumigny lake is 37 acres and set in a beautiful country location to the South West of Paris. Totally surrounded by overhanging trees and woodland the lake has a very natural look for a commercial fishery. The lake is shared with Dutch, French and Belgian anglers so there is a multi-national feel to the place.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France Sturgeon

The lake
Etang De Vaumigny was dug out some 80 years ago forming a 37 acre gravel pit. It is situated South West of Paris and for the last 18 years the lake and its 2 sister lakes have been owned by Frank’s family.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
A View from Swim 10
All the banks are lined with overhanging trees and some of the margins are littered with fallen branches, creating an ideal habitat for all species of fish. There is an island situated some 70 yards off the overgrown Northern bank which falls into the waters of swims 1, 15 and 16. These swims give access to the Northern margins and the island margins. The other end of he lake is the location of Frank’s lodge and the facilities. Just in front of the Lodge is a strip of tree-lined land that sticks out into the lake for about 100 yards and separates swims 6 and 7 from swim 8. All the other swims on the lake have open water to cast to.
Frank manages Vaumigny which carries a stock of between 900 and 1000 carp, with nearly half being over 30lb and a good head of 40lb+ fish to weights just under 70lb of carp. There are 16 Sturgeon to over 100lb and catfish to 160lb also present in the lake.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
One of the first fish out of the lake, a 39lb 14oz mirror
There are a total of 16 swims, some being doubles, all with ample room to erect a bivvy and plenty of fishing space. Some of the swims have steep banks down to the waters edge, but most have gentle slopes. The depths range from 1.5 meters to 3 meters with the lake bottom varying in its make up, from silt, sand, and in places hard rock. There are a few sunken snags in the lake which can be avoided with the help of Frank, who knows his water like the back of his hand.
Most of margins are deep with overhanging trees creating a truly picturesque lake.

Frank has a lodge at the Southern end of the lake between swims 7 and 8. Part of the lodge contains the fisherman’s facilities consisting of a single toilet and shower, and 2 fridge freezer’s. Also there are numerous electrical charging points which do require English adaptors.
Although basic, the facilities are kept clean and tidy and hot water is available at the turn of a tap. Frank has a menagerie of chickens and geese that roam the lake and are regular visitors to the nearby swims to Frank’s lodge.
There are 6 one man punts for hire which can be used to rescue snagged fish, and put out bait etc. There are also 2 wheel barrows for transporting tackle to swims 8 to 13, and you will need them as the swims are well spaced.

The Fishing
On arriving at the lake Ron and I received a warm welcome from Frank. We were aware that swims 1( a double swim), 15 and 16 were already taken by 2 Belgian anglers and 2 Dutch Anglers, these swims having one of the main features in the lake, a large island to the North of the lake. We had the rest of the lake to choose from and we spent the first few hours walking the flat banks of the lake. Vehicle access was available to all swims with the exception of swims 8 to 14.
I settled into swim 7 which gave me access to a large expanse of open water and the point of a tree lined peninsular. Ron chose swim 3 giving him a vast amount of open water to plan his fishing for the week.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
Flat bank’s overlooking swim 6
Ron’s choice of bait was Quest Chilli Chocolate and Magnum White, while I went with my Quality Baits CM60. We both started off by plumbing and leading the swims in front of us to find the best locations to start our baiting campaign. Frank informed us that the previous week had produced 1 carp of 59lbs, an impressive fish but obviously they weren’t getting their heads down. The wind was pushing up towards the  other end of the lake so I was expecting a slow start to the week.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
36lb 2oz
After plumbing and leading the water in front of me I selected an area some 40 yards out in open water to put 2 rods with the remaining rod being cast to the margins of the peninsular. I spombed out 18 mil CM60 onto my open water rod and used the throwing stick to get a fair supply of boilies onto the margin rod.
The first action came to my margin rod at around 1am on the Sunday morning and by dawn I had landed carp of 39lb 14oz, 36lb 2oz and 2 other upper twenties. Ron’s indicators remained silent.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
Michael landed this 53lb specimen
The wind pushed in the direction of the North and seemed to keep most of the fish around the snaggy margins of the North bank and the island. I continued to pick up the odd fish during the hours of darkness. Ron had a couple of runs but missed the opportunity to land them.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
Freek made the best of his swim
On Monday night I moved into swim 7 which gives access to the bay at the side of the peninsular. I was aware that there are snags under the marginal trees, but I did not at that time realise to what extent. I soon came to find out. During the night I had 3 runs 2 hook pulls due to the overhanging trees and I lost what I believed to be a huge carp in the snags. I felt the line grate and then part at the swivel.
Before dawn I was on the move back to swim 6. I could not see the point of loosing fish and tackle to the snags. If I had carried on I would have been fishing irresponsibly. I settled in swim 6 for the duration of the week and Ron decided on a move in torrential rain to swim 8, on the opposite side of the peninsular to myself.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
38 dutch pounds
On Wednesday afternoon, Martin from Angling Lines arrived at the lake, hopefully to capture some video footage of Ron or myself landing some of the lakes inhabitants. Fat chance of that, neither Ron or myself had a run in the 2 days that Martin was with us. Fortunately the Dutch and Belgium guys were still on fish and Martin managed to get a huge sturgeon over 100lb on film, a 53lb carp and a couple of upper twenties.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
Martin getting footage of the action
I was present when the sturgeon was landed by Thierry. Luckily the hook on the end of his line had caught on the swivel of anther hook link that had another hook deeply embedded in the sturgeons thick lips. Once safely landed we removed the other hooklink which turned out to be the one that I lost in what I thought was a huge carp in swim 6. Well I can truly say that this was the one that got away.

Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
Ron made the best of his the new wind – 32lb 8oz
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
34lb 4oz
Thursday evening and Martin packed up his video equipment and was on the road back to Oakview.
It was shortly after his departure that the weather changed. A deluge of heavy rain blown on by a strong wind pushed down our side of the lake straight into the face of Ron who was still camped in Swim 8. I remained in swim 6, right opposite Ron and was catching the side of the wind, it was enough as the action began to happen. By first light in the morning the wind dropped, and we had both benefited with 5 carp each to our names. A busy night with one more run at lunchtime for Ron.
The wind had eased and so had the fishing, however around 3am on the Saturday morning Both Ron and I had a 30lb+ carp each, nicely rounding off a week’s fishing at Vaumigny.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
Ron’s prize of the bunch – 43lb 8oz
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
One of my few daylight caught fish – 33lb 6oz
Ron’s fish all fell in a 26 hour period starting from the early hours of Friday morning and amounted to mirrors of 43lb 8oz, 34lb 4oz, 32lb 8oz, 30lb 2oz and 3 twenties.
Steadily over the week I landed mirror carp of 39lb 14oz, 37lb 8oz, 37lb 6oz, 36lb 2oz, 33lb 6oz,  4 twenties, 3 high doubles and a 20lb 13oz catfish.

Conclusion
From the short time that we spent at Vaumigny, we soon came to realise that this lake is not the for the inexperienced angler. There are many challenges that can be thrown at you. The sturgeon that can grow to over 100lb and can be a nuisance as they charge around the lake, fish too far out and you will surely get liners as the fins or tail catch your lines. There are also some huge catfish present with one specimen that is over 160lb so along with some huge carp, all species will test the average anglers carp gear.
Although we did not experience Poison Chat or Crayfish, from my research I have gathered, during the warmer parts of the year they can cause the angler a problem so be prepared. Fishing too close to the margins can be a nightmare as the fish know were to run and head straight for the snags, so heavy line is required or better still fish the open water. With this lake being around 37 acres, as with all large French waters, the fish followed the wind, so not every swim will produce fish. If there are empty swims, be prepared to move. This is a water where anglers will have some fantastic results and others will blank, so be prepared for the worst.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
37lb 6oz, one of 5 fish caught in one night
Despite all the challenges thrown at you, Vaumigny is a true big carp water with over half of the carp above the 30lb barrier and lots of 40lb plus carp to wet your appetite.
Not all of the fish are huge, some of the carp are high doubles and twenties, but all make a good account of themselves.
Vaumigny Carp Lake in France
Last fish of the session, 37lb 8oz
The fish love bait, so take plenty of boilies and if necessary, back up with particles. Bait Boats are allowed and they certainly would give the user an advantage over the casting angler, as there are many areas that are out of reach to cast due to the size of the lake.
This magnificent lake is surrounded by trees, in a beautiful, unspoilt environment, and has sufficient stock to provide Angling Lines customers with a holiday to remember. Strong tackle is essential and the lake is capable of breaking most anglers PB’s, making them return year after year to Frank’s lake of dreams.

Molyneux continues to amaze… 15 known 40lb+ carp

Molyneux Carp Lake in France
Richard – 41.12
After such a momentous weeks fishing at Molyneux it seemed only right and proper that I post up a few photos over and above the normal half dozen that accompany the week’s report.
With five new forty pound carp caught it is a very exciting time for Molyneux and this takes the number of known forty pound plus carp to 15.
Amazing really, when you think that just two years ago we had only 2 different forties in the lake. Testament to the quality of the water, and the feeding program we have initiated.

Monsters in the Shallow Bay

Lac Du Villefond has been fishing really well recently and with a gap in the bookings I decided to take the opportunity to spend some time catching the monsters that swim our waters…
I wasn’t able to fish a whole week so I decided I would at least pre-bait for a few days on the build up to Tuesday the 21st of May 2013 when I could finally get bank side. I had decided to use two rods and pre-baited a spot in the shallows right in the margins as the week before I had been told the fish had been jumping down there every night.I pre-baited with the house bait Plum Nut with around 3kg a day for three days prior to fishing, the bait varied in size as I used the off cuts from all the bait I had been rolling for fishermen the months before.
The Shallow Bay
The Shallow Bay
I choose to fish the first swim casting to the far margins in the shallow bay, my baits would be in only about 2ft of water maximum. I knew how massive the majority of our fish are so I knew they would probably only be right in the shallows after dark when I believed they would be down there for the tadpoles and other natural foods hatching in the margins.

Molyneux Report to 4th May 2013

Lake record grass carp caught & five new forty pound fish landed… Saturday morning and the phone rang bright and early, the Dawson party were at the Molyneux gate already!
I opened the gate and welcomed them back to the lake. I often say how good it is to see old faces back at the lake and this group are no exception. James, his father Richard, and friend Reece were back to fish again, and had brought with them Matt who was a non angler here for the social side of things. We put a cuppa in their hand and explained that we would be with them as soon as we had finished serving breakfast and had seen our previous weeks guests off.

Breakfast was served, our goodbyes were said and we waved off the previous weeks group. A short while later another of the week’s anglers arrived, Richard and his non angler girlfriend Shannon were welcomed and introduced to those already here. Not long after our final angler Nick arrived with his father Paul who was also a non angler.
The guys chose the swims that they would like to fish, and as Nick’s father was planning to disappear each day to play golf I insisted that Nick fish close to Nick who he knew from the UK, purely… read more here

Far (west) bank now open at Sapphire

Sapphire anglers will be pleased to learn that the opposite (west) bank is now fully open for both bivvies and stalking…

In the past this was really only accessible with a bait boat… so it gave the carp an area many people couldn’t reach.  Pressure all round the lake will certainly help the fishing.

Meanwhile on the peg side, Gerard the bailiff has improved the vehicle access at the central entrance.
So getting at the Sapphire fish just got a whole lot easier… and the fishing has been very good of late with the last 2 sessions having produced 4 x 50lb+ carp including a new lake record of 58.12.  Sapphire is coming of age!

Margot Carp Lake – Questions and Answers

Paul Cooper, one of our expert Field Testers, recently answered a query about Margot, a good read if you’re going out to the venue this year!
Hi Paul,
I’m at Margot this Saturday and was wondering as a regular if you have any favoured swims/areas/tactics etc? Thank you for your time.
This is a good choice of venue and I am sure that you will love it there.  My personal choice of swims would be swim 3 or 4. Fish straight out in front of you about 80 to 85 yards and you will find a nice area to build up a feeding table. The bottom is a little silty but the fish feed well here.
Map of Margot Carp Lake
Swim Map
Keep the bait going in the same place and do not spread your bait around. Stick to one baited area all week and feed the swim regularly once you start getting runs. It may take a few days for the swim to develop, but stick at it and you should get the results. I would fish 2 rods on the baited area and the others just off it. I would avoid putting out pellet as this attracts in the grassies, that is unless you want to catch them. The grass carp are massive and can take some handling once in the net and on the bank.
Best of luck and I look forward to see you holding a few biggies on the feedback reports.

Big Fish Time at Old Oaks

May has been a mad month at Old Oaks with plenty of big fish, here’s the round up below…
Earlier in April, Des Chapman landed 3 fifties up to 54lb, almost in a row, with a plenty of forties and high thirties.
Andrew Hooper’s team had a super week with 33 fish including the Long common and the Pizza common at 52lb3oz and 6 forties.
60lb common carp
A kiss for the Long common at 60lb 8oz
Terry Campen and Peter Shearing were fishing from Saturday 18 May. Terry had his very first bite on Sunday and what a bite… the Long Common at 60lb 8oz ! ! !
Peter, a few days later, was happy to break the lake record mirror with a stunning dark fish weighing 58lb.  He also had a 54lb and 5 good forties including a fast growing common at 42lb.
Finally, last week, Tony Wolfe’s party enjoyed a super week with 30 fish, with 16 forties and  2 fifties at 52lb 6oz and a new lake record at 58lb 12oz !
So it’s another new lake record within a week and the good news is it’s a different fish.
